Following Elijah’s stunning victory over the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18, he turns his attention to drought that continued to linger over the land. Back in 1 Kings 17, Elijah had announced a drought on the land because of the apostasy of the people. They had backed into Baalism and paganism. And their failure to remain faithful to the Lord carried the judgment of God removing his word from the people, signified by the lack of rain or dew. This was also a polemic against Baal, the storm god. The Baal cycle would be broken and the LORD would show himself to be God.
"With which person in the Bible do you most identify?" This is a question I have often asked others in the church over the years. Most of us lack even enough self-awareness to able to answer the question. Others among us have a propensity to appeal to the best characters in Scripture.

Anne du Bourg – A Conflicted Martyr
Anne du Bourg is an important French Protestant who is almost entirely forgotten. Born around 1520 in Riom, in the French region of Auvergne, he studied law at the University of Orléans, where he received his doctorate in 1550. He then remained there as professor until 1557, when he obtained the prestigious post of counsellor in the French Parliament. He was known for his noble deportment and friendly nature.

When it comes to justification and sanctification, you cannot have one without the other. It is important to understand that justification and sanctification are distinct aspects of our salvation in Jesus Christ but justification and sanctification are also inseparable aspects of our salvation. The reason justification and sanctification are inseparable is because they are benefits of the saving work of Jesus Christ. If we possess Christ, then we will possess all the aspects of his benefits. When the Holy Spirit brings Christ to us, he does not bring him in parts but the whole.
Jonathan Edwards pastored a congregational church in Northampton, Massachusetts for many years. It would be easy to assume that Edwards was a Congregationalist at heart or that he therefore did not hold the Westminster Standards in high esteem.
It is expected that denominations whose lifeblood is constituted by one of the great historic confessions should subscribe to them. The Church of England subscribes to the Thirty-Nine Articles, Lutherans to the Book of Concord, Dutch Reformed Calvinists to the Three Forms of Unity, and Presbyterians to the Westminster Confession of Faith. There are some Baptists who adopt the London Confession of Faith as an accurate summary of biblical doctrine. Once this point has been conceded, however, questions arise.
