Preaching and the definition of insanity

March 1, 2012
The definition of insanity that I first heard on the West Wing is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. According to the ever trustworthy website 'Brainy quotes' this was first said by Albert Einstein. Anyway, no matter who said it, on Sunday when many of us get up to preach we will do what most people think is the definition of insanity. We'll sing, read, pray and preach like we do every Sunday and yet we expect different results. There will be non Christians who've sat there for weeks, months, even years and by the look on their faces they are thinking I've heard it all before
.
We will keep preaching anyway because although many of us are slightly insane, we know that it is in the preaching of the life giving word that men and women and boys and girls are born again. We believe in the words of the Shorter Catechism Question 89 ' The Spirit of God maketh the reading, but especially the preaching of the Word, an effectual means of convicting and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation'. We'll do the same thing we do every week but expect different results.
