Dear John, Happy Birthday

Stephen Nichols
I couldn't let the day pass without wishing John Calvin a very happy 500th.  He reminds us that theologians serve at the pleasure of God, in gratitude for him and for his glory.  He reminds us that theologians serve the church.  He reminds us that theologians engage the true questions of the day.

I'll be celebrating with my good friends at Wheatland Presbyterian Church here in Lancaster.  It's not quite Geneva, and we won't get to see Phil and Derek in matching yellow shirts, but we'll have cake and the kids get to play "pin the beard on the theologian" and for a few moments we'll reflect on the life and legacy of Calvin and all of those good things his life and work reminds us of.  The festivities get underway within the hour.

ps  Am I the only one who thinks Calvin500 sounds like a NASCAR race?  If so, is Jackson (Mississippi, of course) the host?
