Public Schools: USA vs. UK?

I remember that in a post below, Carl said that his children attend public school.  I was wondering if he might have some insights by comparing the public school system in the UK vs. that in the US.  (And, yes, I know that in the UK, public school means private school, but you know what I mean.)
