Penal Substitution and the UK
Spring Harvest, the largest evangelical conference in the UK, has severed its longstanding relationship with UCCF (which owns the British side of InterVarsity Press). The issue appears to be that of penal substitution and the position of Steve Chalke (who infamously referred to penal substitution as "cosmic child-abuse"). Bishop Broadbent, of Spring Harvest, recently responded to a charge made by Jeffrey John that penal substitution made God into a "psychopath." The blogosphere is in overdrive, but you can start here.
[Earlier this morning I inadvertently attributed the "psychopath" charge to Bishop Broadbent! My humble apologies. I understand the good bishop is on the side of the angels on this one. Thanks to "Chris" for pointing this out to me. BTW, check out his website, http://chriswatsonlee.wordpress.com]
