Remembering Dr. Iain D. Campbell
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform our readers that Dr. Iain D. Campbell went to be with the Lord early this morning. Dr. Campbell was one of of the foremost pastor/theologians in Scotland in our day. Dr. Campbell pastored Snizort Free Church, Isle of Skye from 1988 to 1995. He then pastored Back Free Church from 1995 to 2009. His final pastorate was at Point Free Church from 2009 to present.
Iain was the author of numerous books, including The Doctrine of Sin, The Gospel According to Ruth, Opening up Exodus and On the First Day of the Week. He was also a regular contributor at Reformation 21, as well as the Banner of Truth and Tabletalk Magazine. It was out of our deep admiration for Dr. Campbell and his ministry that the Ref21 editorial team asked him to be the first theologian highlighted in a series of interviews that we called, "Todays Theologians."
Iain was not only an outstanding theologian, he was also an extremely kind and loving man. Iain went out of his way to befriend and guide many young men in their theological studies and pastoral pursuits. He was particularly kind to me, interacting with me many times with regard to the biblical theology of the Song of Songs--a subject that was near and dear to both of us. In 2009, I had the great privilege of interviewing Dr. Campbell regarding his work on the Christology of the Song of Song. That interview focused on Dr. Campbell's groundbreaking Westminster Theological Journal article, "The Song of David's Son." While many loved Dr. Campbell's preaching, his sermons on the Song of Solomon are particularly wonderful expositions of Scripture.
While we mourn the loss of this beloved father and brother in the faith, we rejoice to know that he is in the arms of his Beloved, who is altogether lovely. We are comforted by knowing that Iain is now experiencing the love and communion of Jesus Christ in a way that he longed to experience it during this life. Our prayers are now for God to comfort Iain's wife and children with the comfort of the Gospel.
