Witherington on Rock -- a Socio-Rhetorical Commentary
Posted by
For any moshers out there who might be interested: Ben Witherington, evangelical NT scholar, has been posting a series of `classic rock' lists on his blog, showing that he is not simply one of the most readable and lucid NT scholars for idiots like myself from outside the field; he's also a man of impeccable musical taste. You'll find the stuff here. Don't know why he doesn't list Stevie Ray V among the guitar heroes -- perhaps that's his evangelical Arminianism at work -- though, strange to tell, Machen would no doubt have agreed with him on this omission. While he was, so I am told, a huge fan of the live version of Willie the Weeper, he famously upset Charles Erdman with his insistence that `Stevie Ray plays blues, not rock!'
For myself, the warm afterglow of last Friday's Peter Frampton/Jethro Tull concert at the Mann still lingers -- blistering versions of Thick as a Brick and Aqualung from Tull, who still have it after all these years. I wonder if Prof W will offer his thoughts on these ageing British rockers?
