Barry Being Barry

Sometime this summer, Barry Bonds -- who plays outfield for the San Francisco Giants -- will become Major League Baseball's all-time leading home run hitter.  Few will cheer, however, because Mr. Bonds's alleged steroid use and lack of interest in anything but himself have also made him one of the least popular players in the history of baseball.

Case in point: When asked why he hasn't given any of his personal memorabilia to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Barry said, “I’m not worried about the Hall. I take care of me.”

His comments have been widely criticized, but I wonder if that is really fair.  After all, isn't "taking care of me" one of the core values of American culture?
