An Evening of Brahms

Posted by

For the last several years Tenth Church has been performing a concert on the evening of Good Friday -- something that has proven to be a suitable recognition of the day and an effective outreach to our Center City community.

This year's concert featured the Concerto in D Major for Violin and Orchestra performed by our own Hye-Jin Kim, a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute.  Also, the Tenth Church Choir sang the Brahms Requiem, accompanied by the Tenth Chamber Players, under the direction of Alliance Council member Dr. Paul Jones.

To hear this concert and other music from Tenth Church, go to http://www.tenth.org/index.php?id=198.

The whole evening of music was absolutely magnificent and received rapturous applause.  It is a joy to have this music in the church and to offer it as a gift to our neighbors.

I was deeply moved by the Reqiuem, which I have been listening to on recording a couple of times every month since last fall.  The full intensity of this passionate work can only be experienced in person.  The texts of John 16:22 and Revelation 14:13, especially, brought me fresh appreciation for the joy of the resurrection and the hope of eternal life.  I hope to preach from the former text next year at Easter; my father has asked for the latter text to be preached at his funeral.
