A view from the cab
Posted by
In line with recent practice, we have asked a celebrity cab driver to speak on an issue of the hour. This week: Should Derek Thomas be sacked for not bothering to change the blog question more than once a year? We are pleased to have the opinion of Reg Presley -- no, not the lead singer of sixties rock sensations, The Troggs, but Driver no. 77257 with Wild Thing Cabs, Tooting. Reg, thanks for giving us your time: what do you think of Derek Thomas's delinquency on the blog question?
Well, guvnor, I think it's a right disgrace it is, and no mistake. I mean, if you're going to attract people to your blog, you gotta do one of two things: either change it as often as you change your socks (But I do change the blog question once a year!! -- Del-Boy Thomas) or you've got to really locate your status quo in the past in order to promote critical engagement with the horizon of the radical eclecticism of the consume-driven frenzy that is this present age. I mean, that's why so many people these days have defected from evangelicalism to that Southern Orthodoxy movement, ain't they. I mean, you'll never guess who I 'ad in the back of the cab the other day? Only that Bishop Nikos Nascaris, the High Archimandrite of the Southern Orthodox Church in Tupelo -- you know, the one who put the `mental' back in `sacramental' and all that. Well, that Nascaris, he was telling me, right, that his liturgy was so ancient, right, that it dated all the way back to before Elvis's Sun sessions; and he was also tellin' me that it was the only liturgy where every word has at least two syllables, like, even the ones with only one syllable!! Well, I can't believe I'm 'earin' this, I thought; but then I went down to the local Southern Orthodox Church, St Lynyrd the Skynyrd's down, and blow me, guvnor, if they weren't building their church on the Southern rock of ages (that's enough Southern Orthodoxy -- Del Boy Thomas)
