Not getting it (John Allen on Desmond Tutu)
Posted by
Desmond Tutu's former press secretary has just published a biography of this well known anti-apartheid warrior. Among other things, Allen indicates Tutu's chagrin at the Anglican communion's failure to embrace homosexual priests (Tutu wrote the former Archbishop of Canterbury and told him he was ashamed to be an Anglican, because of this stance).
One thing that caught my eye was this comment: "He found it little short of outrageous that church leaders should be obsessed with issues of sexuality in the face of the challenges of AIDS and global poverty." Hello? What were you missing Dr. Tutu?
The connection between issues of sexuality and AIDS is bone-jarringly obvious, and is precisely one of the reasons that the brave African Anglican converservative evangelical leadership is so crystal clear on the issue. Of course, the ole "I'm too busy working on global poverty" to bother with a mundane issue like God's creational design for the sexuality of human beings created in his image, for eternal fellowship with him and for his glory -- is a typical approach to dismissing Christian orthodoxy.
