Bye bye to Blair
Posted by
I've not got much time for blogging these days. The discovery of VH1 Classic, with endless footage of greats such as Def Leppard (we are not worthy!) is proving a distraction. I am, however, glad to see that the sleazy, reactionary, Blair administration in my homeland limps to its sorry conclusion. The only sadness is that the woeful Mr Brown will probably take his place. But such is the way with British politics.
America, of course, has its 22nd amendment, setting term limits to presidencies. One effect of this is that it is possible to end one's political career in America as a success. In Britain, Prime Ministers are like heavyweight boxing champs and -- ahem -- rock stars (just look at Sir Paul) who go on until it all ends in tears. What was it someone (Howard Cosell?) said about Ali's last fight? Like watching an autopsy on a living person.Tongue half in cheek, one could ask which nation really believes in big government: the one that legislates in a way that protects human nature from the tragic overreach to which it is prone and thus projects the illusion of success; or the one that stands back and allows fallen human nature full scope to go on and on until public self-destruction is inevitable. America as Pelagius; Britain as Augustine; now there's a thought.....
